Timeless, classical and inspiring - Dior has always been a love of mine. Whether it is vintage 1940s volume or the rich colourful haute couture fashion of today.
I am often drawn back to their silhouettes for wedding dress inspiration.

A lover of short alternative wedding dresses..my own being short fitted lace number. I have loved and adored this dress that Elizabeth Taylor worn for one of her weddings. Beautifully fitted, rich in colour and that hood!
As I sit down this week to design my sisters wedding dress …what a privileged job I have . I can’t help but look back and be inspired by the dresses in our family. My grandmothers 1940’s jacquard silk gown to my mothers 1970’s silk crepe hooded dress.
They both have what I love to see in wedding dresses, they represent these ladies tastes and personality to a tee.
One of the best perks of my job is when you get to collaborate with some of the most talented suppliers in the business. A photoshoot, although hard work to organise, gives us creatives an opportunity to explore and indulge ourselves, to dream and delighted.
So with that in mind, at the start of the summer I teamed up with Tara Aherne Photography with a vision of a classic, regal wedding shoot. Tara was in love with Carlton house, with its beautiful rooms and breathtaking surrounding it was not hard to see its charm. Armed with our venue we created a mood board for the day.

On a rare sunny day in early summer we had Prima Models Ashlea and Simon put into the talented hands of Stacey from Making faces Gorey and Michelle O’Halloran hairstylist. Where they set about creating our classic elegant looks, keeping with our regal timeless vision
To set our scene was stylist Kristine from Love Bird Designs, Citrus Ink Stationary and Cocomoiselle for that cake and macaroni threats. All delighting us with their create genius. Adding those specially thought out details that would delight any bride to be
I had spent some time create dresses especially for this shoot . Using soft silk chiffon, luxurious silk crepes I wanted our brides’ natural beauty to shine through. Using delicate lace embellishment to finish each piece with something special. For our flower girls’ dress, made from silk satin crepe, I used a simple soft silhouette with fun feather detailed trim. Creating a fun but elegant style for the little ones of the wedding party.

There is nothing like when a plan comes together and you only have to look at the stunning photos to see how great our day turned out and how much amazing talent is out there for brides to create an amazing wedding day

It is around this time of year when our summer brides are just having final touches done to their dresses that I start to think of a new collection. So this week I am taking a little break from the norm and giving an insight to where I find my inspiration and how I start the process of designing new dresses.
Time out from my studio is usually a great opportunity for me to relax and let my mind escape. This week I took a trip to Killarney for some family time and I came back buzzing with excitement. What a beautiful country we have at our finger tips. The colours all around us, lush greens, pink sky's and vibrant floral shades.
Taking my new found inspiration and my chilled out mind I couldn't help but create 2015's mood board when I landed back in the studio on Thursday (thank you to my hard working assistant Molly for indulging me). This is always just a starting point for me to get a feeling, a mood of how the next year will be. It is from here that I will in the coming weeks start to design the next collection.
I will now gather together fabrics, laces and embellishments that I wish to use in the coming year. I will do samples of beading and fabric manipulation that I would like to incorporate into the collection. With hopefully the final sketches coming together in the coming weeks. Follow my progress on Instagram @sfoydesign.
So if you are just starting out and struggling to get ideas for your wedding. Take a deep breath, a glass of wine and hit Pinterest to create your own mood board. It doesn't have to be wedding related images that you pin, just what you are drawn too. This will help you to get an idea of what you love, hate and adore.
With passion
Sarah
